Pisgah Fish Hatchery

The Pisgah Forest Fish Hatchery, adjacent to the wildlife center, is a cold-water fish hatchery, which grows approximately 500,000 trout a year. These fish are used to stock over 60 streams in 15 counties. Visitors can view and feed the hatchery-raised trout.Of the fish raised in the hatchery, 40 percent are rainbow trout, 40 percent are brook trout (also known as "speckles") and 20 percent are brown trout. Brook trout are North Carolina's only native trout. Rainbow trout were brought from the Pacific Northwest and brown trout were brought from Europe, both in the late 1800s.
